Karen Sawyer is a full member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) and is fully registered with the HCPC. Karen is also a BAAT Approved Private Practitioner and the Founder and Principal Art Therapist at KSAT.
I trained as an Art Psychotherapist at Hertfordshire University having previously completed a BA Honours in Media and Design. I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy and a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Training in Art Psychotherapy. I also undertook training in Infant Observation at the Tavistock, London. I am committed to continuing to maintain my professional development through attendance at relevant conferences and training events. I also attend clinical supervision and maintain professional links with other professions.
I have professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
I am a full member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT).

I have enhanced DBS clearance.
I have civil liability insurance for all private clinical work.
I abide by the code of conduct and the principles of practice as set out by BAAT and HCPC.
I have extensive experience of working with children, families, parents and adults over more than 20 years. I have specialised in the clinical area of the mental health of children and young people. The training I have undertaken has focused on personality development, emotional development, attachment and the impact of trauma on development.
I am currently in private practice, having been previously employed for 12 years by a local NHS CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental health Service) team. I also work within a specialist secondary school with students with Social Emotional and Mental Health Needs. Prior to this, I had worked within primary schools, adolescent inpatient units, adult mental health units, and Social Services Looked after Children.
I supervise MA Art Therapy trainees on clinical placement, and have lectured to first year MA Art Therapy students at the University of Hertfordshire. I provide training regarding mental health of children and adolescents to teaching staff. I have provided workshops for employees regarding emotional wellbeing and stress reduction. I facilitated an experiential Art Therapy group at the Goldsmith University International Art Therapy Conference in 2013.
